How to Choose a Garden Trampoline – Size, Space and Safety

A trampoline is one of the best buys for the garden: children jump for hours, move in the fresh air and burn off energy. To get it right, though, you need to answer three questions – what size, where it will stand and how to make it safe.
Which trampoline size to choose
Trampoline size is given in feet (FT) and corresponds to the diameter of the frame. Here are the main sizes of Buba trampolines:
| Size | Diameter | Max. load | Space needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.5FT | 140 cm | 45 kg | ≈ 5,4 × 5,4 m |
| 6FT | 183 cm | 80 kg | ≈ 5,8 × 5,8 m |
| 8FT | 244 cm | 120 kg | ≈ 6,5 × 6,5 m |
| 10FT | 305 cm | 120 kg | ≈ 7,1 × 7,1 m |
| 12FT | 366 cm | 120 kg | ≈ 7,7 × 7,7 m |
| 14FT | 427 cm | 120 kg | ≈ 8,3 × 8,3 m |
| 16FT | 488 cm | 120 kg | ≈ 8,9 × 8,9 m |
- 4.5FT and 6FT – for children aged 3+ and smaller gardens. The 4.5FT model uses elastic bands instead of springs and is for children up to 45 kg.
- 8FT and 10FT – the most popular sizes for families with one or two children. They fit in most gardens.
- 12FT, 14FT and 16FT – for large gardens, older children and teenagers. The higher jumping mat (89 cm) gives a higher and softer bounce.
How much space you need
The rule is simple: the diameter of the trampoline plus about 2 metres of free space on all sides. There should be no trees, branches, fences, washing lines or garden furniture in this zone. If your garden is narrow, choose a smaller size – a safe distance matters more than a few extra centimetres of jumping area.
Place the trampoline on a level, soft surface – grass is best. In open, exposed areas, secure it with ground anchors so strong wind cannot move it.
Inner or outer safety net
On trampolines with an inner net (8FT and 10FT), the net is attached on the inside of the springs. The child jumps only on the mat and cannot step on the springs or the frame – which makes them a good choice for younger children. On standard trampolines the net surrounds the trampoline from the outside and the springs are covered with a thick padded cover.
Rules for safe jumping
- The trampoline is not recommended for children under 3, and children under 6 should only jump under adult supervision.
- Only one person jumps at a time.
- No somersaults and no jumping off the trampoline.
- The net and the spring cover must always be fitted correctly.
- Remove the ladder after play so small children cannot climb up unsupervised.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do with the trampoline in winter? We recommend putting the trampoline away for the winter – this protects the frame and springs from corrosion and rust for much longer. If you cannot store it, remove the net and the poles, cover the trampoline with a weather cover and secure it with ground anchors.
Are spare parts available? Yes – for every Buba trampoline size there are original mats, nets, springs, spring covers and weather covers.
